Airline innovations lauded at Crystal Cabin Awards in Hamburg

Officials at the Aircraft Interiors Expo, an industry event currently being held in Hamburg, Germany, recently announced the winners of the Crystal Cabin Awards, reports Business Traveller.

The Crystal Cabin Awards are intended to reward innovation in the interior design of commercial aircraft, and several companies won accolades for their first and business class cabin products. One of the companies highlighted at the award ceremony was Mueller/Romca, which was named a runner-up in the passenger comfort category.

Mueller/Romca earned the award thanks to its first class bathrooms, which can currently be seen in Lufthansa's premium cabins on its Airbus A380 aircraft. These onboard lavatories feature full-wall mirrors and the world's first in-air urinal.

Another winner at the Crystal Cabin Awards was Thales, which won the Judges' Commendation Prize for its work with Qatar Airways. The tech company earned accolades for its TouchPMU system, a handheld touch-screen device that uses the Android operating system to provide passengers with greater functionality when they are enjoying in-flight entertainment. For example, the TouchPMU allows users to simultaneously watch a movie and keep track of a live travel map.
