American Airlines receives recognition for its wine options

For some premium air travelers, a flight's amenities are just as important as reaching their destination. As a result, these individuals often prefer to purchase first class tickets and business class fares for an airline that can provide them with high-quality service and dining options.

American Airlines is among the many carriers that features luxury cabins on their flights. Based on the recent results of Global Traveler magazine's annual survey on airline wine selections, the company came out on top in three areas and will be featured among other winners in the periodical's August issue.

After input from Global Traveler's panel of wine judges, American Airlines was awarded three honors: Best North American Wines on the Wing, Best North American Sparkling for the Gloria Ferrer Sonoma Brut and Best North American Red Wine for the Pellegrini Family Blend.

To identify the deserving airline, Global Traveler had 28 carriers submit 136 white, red sparkling wines or champagne that they serve to passengers who hold first and business class airfares for international flights or for North American premium class cabins. From there, 31 wine industry experts served as the magazine's judges as they participated in blind taste tests.

"We constantly look for ways to improve the experience our customers have onboard our aircraft and our award-winning wine selection is an integral part of that," said Rob Friedman, the vice president of marketing for American Airlines. "It's an honor to have the prestigious judges at Global Traveler recognize our wine program and the efforts of our wine consultant, Ken Chase, to select those premium wines that appeal to our customers' tastes."

Airline officials add that Chase is a classically trained winemaker and viticulturist who takes it upon himself to continuously update the carrier's wine list. This ensures that customers with business and first class tickets are served the finest wines while sitting in American's luxury cabins.

This is not the first time that American Airlines has been honored by Global Traveler. In 2010, the carrier received awards for the Best North American Red Wine for Murphy Goode Cabernet Sauvignon, Best North American Sparkling Wine for the Gloria Ferrer Sonoma Carneros Brut as well as the Best North American Wines on the Wing for its entire premium cabin selection.
