Emirates named 2011 Airline of the Year for its innovative premium service

Dubai-based carrier Emirates has been named the 2011 Airline of the Year by Air Transport World, which lauded the airline for its innovative premium service, reports the Financial.

The award was handed out at a gala dinner in Washington, D.C. on February 8, and authorities from Emirates and Air Transport World were on hand to discuss the airline's win. Perry Flint, the editorial director for Air Transport World, said that Emirates was notable for its trendsetting customer service, particular for its being the only carrier to offer shower suites in first class.

Other innovations cited by Flint include Emirates' history as the first airline to introduce seatback video screens and to allow passengers to make calls on their cell phones while on board the aircraft. Flint also lauded Emirates for its eco-friendly policies, particularly its fuel-saving and emission-reducing flexible air routings.

"This recognition is testament to our commitment to innovation and service excellence as we continue to grow our global network and offer customers more opportunities to discover the world from Dubai," said Tim Clark, president of Emirates.
