Vietnam opens fourth international airport in Can Tho

People traveling to Vietnam will soon be able to take advantage of a new gateway to the Southeast Asian country, as a new international airport has been opened in the city of Can Tho, reports CNN.

The Can Tho International Airport's inauguration comes after Vietnam invested $150 million in upgrading the facility, which was previously just a small regional airstrip. Other international airports in Vietnam are located in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang.

New runways at the airport allow Can Tho to accommodate long-haul jets like the Boeing 777 and 747. The new hub is expected to serve as many as 5 million passengers traveling to and from the Mekong Delta every year.

"The airport provides a big opportunity for Can Tho City in particular and the southwestern area in general to make fast and sustainable development and helps facilitate air travel in the region," said Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung during the airport's ribbon-cutting ceremony.

According to the source, the new airport is expected to help integrate Vietnam into the global economy and to play a role in air defense.
